WHAT IS HARISSA?
Harissa traces its roots to 16th century Southern Mediterranean (Tunisia) where chili peppers, newly introduced from the Americas, were blended with garlic, spices, and olive oil to create an early chili paste.
The name comes from the Arabic word "harasa" meaning "to crush, pound, or mash". The term reflects the traditional method of preparing harissa, where dried chili peppers are pounded with other spices to create a thick paste.
As one of the oldest recorded chili sauces in the Mediterranean, harissa became a bold staple of Southern Mediterranean cuisine and spread across the region, celebrated for its deep flavor and heat. Our version honors that tradition.
